Are Gambling Winnings Taxable?
Yes. Gambling winnings in Indiana are taxable income. For year-round residents, they will have to pay tax on all their gambling winnings. For non- residents, you will need to pay taxes to Indiana on gambling winnings from Indiana’s riverboats, horse racing etc.
Winnings from Indiana’s lotteries are all subject to be taxed. But, they may be eligible for deduction on your income tax return, please see the following “Indiana Lottery Winnings Deductions” form IT-40 and the instruction booklet IT-40PNR.
What Happens If I Owe Back Taxes?
The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) is like the IRS with taxation regulations for unpaid, back taxes, or unfiled taxes. The Indiana DOR is always committed to helping the people of the state settle their debt and finding the best resolution possible for their situations and dealing with back taxes.
Indiana DOR Payment Agreements
The Indiana Department of revenue encourages the people of the state to pay their bills in full, and on time. However, sometimes this is hard to do for some residents, so what your able to do is request a payment agreement from the DOR.
If you owe under $500 in taxes you can make a payment arrangement over 12 months. If you owe more than $500, the DOR will extend this time to a maximum of 24 months.
To set up a payment agreement you need to be able to pay 20% of what is owed up front, interest, and penalties for any late payment will still be added monthly until paid in full.
Indiana Offer in Compromise (OIC)
An Offer in Compromise is an agreement that allows you to settle your taxes for less than what’s owed. Any offer you make must be a reasonable amount based on how much you owe and your earnings.
To make an Offer in Compromise, you’ll need to fill out Form FS-OIC and submit it to the Office of the Indiana Taxpayer Advocate.
Submitting an OIC does not guarantee that you will be accepted. Interest and penalties will continue to occur while your application is being reviewed. If you are accepted you will need to put down 20% of the amount owed if you’re planning on making payments rather than paying what is owed in one lump-sum.
